My Story: The Newport Beach Fertility Doctor Who’s Been a Patient Too

Most doctor bios are a list of degrees. You’ll find mine on my CV. This page is the human part.

By Dr. Melody Rasouli, MD, MBA · HRC Fertility Newport Beach

What being a patient taught me

I learned that waiting is its own kind of hard. Waiting for results, for a phone call, for a cycle to start, for a pregnancy test. As a doctor, I used to think of those as gaps between the important parts. As a patient, I realized they are the experience. That’s why I try hard to explain what’s coming next and when you’ll hear from us.

I learned that knowing the medicine doesn’t make it easier. Being the patient feels completely different from being the doctor, no matter how much you know. Information helps, but people also need someone to sit with them in the uncertainty.

I learned how isolating it can feel. Fertility struggles are common, but they are rarely talked about, so people tend to go through them alone. And I learned how much small things matter: a nurse who remembers your name, a doctor who gives you a straight answer, a clinic that doesn’t make you feel like a number.

How I got here

I’ve loved science for as long as I can remember. As a teenager I competed at the International Science and Engineering Fair, which tells you how long I’ve loved this stuff. I went to the University of Southern California for college, medical school, and an MBA. The business degree surprises people, but I wanted to understand how health care actually works for patients: the systems, the costs, and the frustrating gaps between the two.

I trained in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where I served as Administrative Chief Resident. Then I completed my fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at UCLA in 2026. In August 2026, I joined HRC Fertility in Newport Beach, where I now care for patients from across Orange County.

Along the way I’ve published research on IVF outcomes, PMOS, hypothalamic amenorrhea, embryo genetics, and the legal and ethical side of fertility care. You can see it all on my CV.

Why women in medicine, and everyone else

Part of my work has focused on fertility for women in medicine. Physicians often delay having children through long years of training, and many learn about their fertility too late. I’ve co-chaired fertility efforts with the American Medical Women’s Association and studied how hard it is for medical trainees to even find information about their fertility benefits.

But the bigger point applies to everyone: you deserve clear information about your fertility before you’re in a hurry. That’s why I talk so openly about egg freezing, and why I spend time on social media trying to make fertility education less intimidating.

Outside the clinic

I do yoga, play tennis, and travel whenever I can. I’m also learning to cook, and the operative word there is learning. I speak conversational Spanish and Farsi, and I’m always happy when a patient is more comfortable in one of them.

I believe your fertility is connected to the rest of your life: how you eat, how you move, how you cope with stress. That’s why I write about nutrition, exercise, and acupuncture alongside IVF and PMOS.

Questions Patients Ask Me

Do I need to have been trying for a long time to see you?

No. You’re welcome to come in whenever you have questions. As a general guide, it’s worth an evaluation after a year of trying if you’re under 35, after six months if you’re 35 or older, and right away if your periods are irregular or you have a known condition.

Can I see you if I’m just curious about my fertility?

Absolutely. Many of my patients come in simply to learn about their ovarian reserve and options. Getting information early is one of the best things you can do for your future self.

Do you speak Spanish or Farsi?

I speak conversational Spanish and Farsi. For detailed medical conversations, we can also arrange a professional interpreter so nothing gets lost.

Where do you see patients?

I see patients at HRC Fertility Newport Beach, 20360 SW Birch St, Suite 200, Newport Beach, CA 92660. Patients come from Irvine, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, and across Orange County.

Do I need a referral to book a consultation?

Many patients book directly. Some insurance plans require a referral, so our team can check your plan when you reach out. Call (949) 287-5600 or use the consultation form.
